Integrative Medicine in General Practice CD ROM receives high praise
Integrative Medicine in General Practice CD ROM
By Avni Sali (principal author)
As reviewed by Cathy Morris, MBBS, for the Journal of Complementary Medicine
The Integrative Medicine in General Practice CD ROM has been produced by several leading Australian authors in this field. I found it informative, intelligently assembled and fascinating to participate in. GPs interested in incorporating aspects of integrative medicine into their patient-care profile will feel more empowered and confident to do so after completing this educational module, which has been accredited 30 RACGP
QA&CPD points for the 2005-2007 triennium.
An Advanced Learning Module is available for individual GPs, and a Small Group Learning Module for those wishing to complete it with a group of peers.
The module comprises 13 case histories, covering topics including diabetes, osteoarthritis, stress, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, Crohn's disease, menopause, asthma, Alzheimer's Disease and preparing for pregnanacy.
As I worked through each one, I was impressed with the combination of conventional medical knowledge and the complementary treatment strategies provided. Where nutritional and dietary supplements are recommended, precise doses are advised, along with appropriate interactions and precautions.
The integrative treatment strategies for each condition- incorporating aspects such as lifestyle, nutrition, acupuncture, mind-body medicine and botanical medicine - are very well set out in the 12 monographs provided. The information they contain is well referenced with evidence-based medicine, and appropriate to the case management.
The monographs may be downloaded and would be a useful reference as part of a patient handout and for GPs wanting to check integrative strategies.
For any GP wondering about the role of chromium in diabetes or the dose and efficacy of glucosamine in osteoarthritis, the evidence-based answers to these and many other complementary interventions are clearly presented. The CD also provides links to and information on related resources and information services in Australia.
In this CD, the authors have cleverly shown doctors how they can learn to use evidence-based complementary medicine and combine it with aspects of conventional practice.
